About Course
This programme is designed to train and equip students and practicing healthcare managers in management of organizations, resources, policy, planning, and finance and quality assurance. Master of Science Health Systems Management prepares students to assume leadership in healthcare organizations. This programme prepares students to be able to think critically about health care problems and solutions. Specific areas include foundations of management (management theories, principles and processes), human resource management, time management, policy analysis, quality management, and financial management, ethical, legal issues in healthcare management, management of healthcare projects, risk assessment and managing diverse workforces in the healthcare industry, among others within the health care environment. It provides students with the education necessary to succeed in the Health Services Environment and enhances employment and promotion potential. This programme is designed to prepare human services professionals (healthcare managers) – including administrators, clinicians, nurses, caregivers, and researchers – to successfully manage and lead healthcare organizations.
MODE OF DELIVERY AND DURATION OF THE PROGRAMME
- The Master in Health Systems Management (HSM) shall extend over a period of two academic years.
- Each academic year shall consist two sessions for Full-time students and three sessions Part-time students.
- The programme shall consist of coursework, examinations and thesis.
- The coursework shall comprise a series of lectures, field activities, visits, demonstrations, reports and case presentations.
- During the first academic year of study, the student will take at least 12 units of course work comprising of three School Common Units and 10 Departmental units).

(Semester 1 = KES 111, 700/USD1117 and Semester 2 = KES 107,200/ USD1027)
- Non-East Africans will pay 20% above local rates for tuition and all mandatory charges
After completion of the course, the prospective learners are expected to be able to: –
- Function within prevailing legal framework in health systems and critically assess existing policy and potentially new policies
- Critically appraise health systems and health care structures in terms of their processes, functionalities and quality
- Conceptualize and design research protocols and other studies that will inform best practices and the measurement of outcomes of health strategies.
- Develop an ethics framework that critically assess the ethical situation inherent in any set of circumstances in health care systems
- Apply core principles and concepts of leadership and management in health systems settings
ENTRY REQUIREMENT
- A holder of a first degree in the following fields: Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy and Dentistry.
OR
- A holder of a first degree, First Class Honours or Second Class Honours (Upper Division) in any of the following fields: Health Systems Management, Environmental Health, Community Health, Health record and information Management, Nutrition, Psychology, Information Science, Economics, Business Administration, Commerce, Community Development, Public Administration, Law and Human Resource Management.
OR
- A holder of a first degree Second Class (Lower Division) in the above disciplines with a minimum of two years post qualification experience in a health related field.
OR
- A holder of a first degree with a health related Post Graduate Diploma of Amref international University or any other recognized institution, with at least 2 years post qualification experience.
