Diploma in Health Records and Information
Technology Level 6
Course Overview
This is a competency-based TVETA approved programme that is offered at Amref International Training Centre (The Amref
International University-TVET Directorate). The course is designed to provide students with the knowledge, skills, attitudes
and competencies necessary to establish, manage and maintain medical records. The student will also gain an understanding of the principles of health information management and the complexity of the healthcare systems, both in private and public sectors of the economy.
Course Duration: 3 Academic years : – 7 Semesters (5 for classwork and 2 for Industrial attachment)
Intakes: January, May and September | Mode of Delivery: Full-time (On Campus) – (Monday-Friday; 8AM – 5PM)
An individual entering this course should have met the following minimum requirements:
- Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) overall mean grade C (Plain)
and in addition to have met in the following Cluster subjects:
- English/Kiswahili C plain,
- Biology/Biological science C-(Minus)
- Mathematics C- (Minus)
- Chemistry/ Physics /Home science/Geography/Agriculture C- (Minus)
or
- Level 5 qualification in Health records and IT
Or
- Any other international qualifications should get approval from the Kenya National Qualification Authority (KNQA)
Upon completion of the Diploma in Health Records, students will be able to:
- Apply the principles of health informatics to manage and maintain medical records
- Analyze epidemiological disease patterns and trends
- Use advanced statistics to interpret health data
- Manage health systems and resources
- Apply health economics to healthcare decision-making
- Monitor and evaluate health projects
Upon completion, the student qualifies as a health records officer, health information technician, health information analyst, or health
information administrator among others.
The student qualifies to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree in Health Records, Health Informatics, Community Health, Environmental Health, or
Medical Social Work programmes amongst others as determined by the Kenya National Qualifications Authority (KNQA).
