Malaria Diagnostic Refresher
Training (MDRT) Course
Course Overview
Quality laboratory services are essential for effective healthcare delivery, disease surveillance, and outbreak preparedness. Accurate and timely bacteriological diagnosis guides appropriate patient management, supports antimicrobial stewardship and provides critical data for public health decision making. However, in sub-Saharan Africa, laboratory capacity remains constrained by limited resources, skills gaps, and inadequate access to continuing professional development. These challenges undermine diagnostic reliability, leading to under-utilization of laboratory services, reliance on clinical diagnosis for patient management, inappropriate antimicrobial use and increased risk of antimicrobial resistance.
The course is approved by the KMLTTB for award of 50 CPD points
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
· Prepare routinely used bacterial culture media in accordance with sterilization and quality assessment standards.
· Demonstrate understanding of the principles guiding specimen collection, handling, and transportation
· Demonstrate understanding of the processing steps for common bacteriology laboratory specimens
· Apply bacteriological techniques to isolate and identify selected global priority enteric, urinary, and sexually transmitted bacterial pathogens.
· Demonstrate the ability to perform, interpret, and report antimicrobial susceptibility testing, and understand the implications of antimicrobial resistance (AMR)
· Demonstrate understanding of quality assurance principles in the bacteriology laboratory.
The course is designed for laboratory technical staff and pathologists working in the bacteriology section of the laboratory, with a minimum of one year of post–pre-service laboratory experience. Participants should be actively engaged in routine bacteriology laboratory service delivery
Course organisation and structure (11 weeks – blended)
This 11-week blended Medical Bacteriology Refresher Training Course, approved by the KMLTTB for award of 50 CPD points, comprises up to 180 hours of coursework and is delivered through three structured phases. Phases One and Three are conducted through distance learning at participants’ workstations, while Phase Two is a residential training conducted at Amref Health Africa’s Central Laboratory in Nairobi. The course can be tailored to support specific institutional requirements upon request
· Phase One – pre-training (2 weeks) equivalent to 20 hours. Participants complete a standardized self-assessment checklist to evaluate bacteriology diagnostic capacity in their laboratories. This phase will be conducted between 22 June 2026 and 3 July 2026
· Phase Two – residential training (1 week) equivalent to 40 hours. This is an intensive classroom-based training focused on strengthening knowledge, skills, and attitudes for bacteriological diagnosis priority pathogens, disease surveillance, and outbreak investigation. Venue for this phase of the training is Amref Central Laboratories in Nairobi or, Ministry of Health facilities, where applicable. This phase will be conducted between 6 – 10 July 2026
· Phase Three – Post-training (8 weeks) equivalent to 120 hours. This is work-based learning phase enabling participants to implement targeted improvement projects within their laboratories. This phase will be conducted between 13 July 2026 and 4 August 2026
Course Fees: USD 1,100
· USD 500 (equivalent to Ksh60,000) to cover tuition, course and reference materials, stationery, photocopying, courier services for certificates and provision of lunch, tea and snacks.
