Master of Public Health (MPH)
Course Overview
The goal of the programme is to train public health specialists who are sensitive to the current and emerging public health challenges and able to offer transformational leadership in core areas of public health programming, management and evidence generation. The programme is structured in three unique tracks as follows:
School health and safety
Applied epidemiology
Public health nutrition.
(AHC) 2026 POSTGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP
Background
Amref International University (AMIU) in partnership with Mastercard Foundation, under the
Africa Health Collaborative (AHC) Program, invites suitable candidates to apply for any of
AMIU’s three listed postgraduate degree Programmes at the institution’s School of Public
Health. AMIU, a premier Pan-African university of health sciences education, is committed to
bridging the human resources for health (HRH) gap by training the next generation of health
professionals equipped to meet Africa’s pressing health needs. Successful candidates will be
part of a networked cohort of highly skilled experts in respective fields with increased
employability and opportunity for employment creation within the health sector and beyond.
Please note that the scholarship is highly competitive.
Course Duration: 2 Academic Years
Intakes: January, May and September | Mode of Delivery: Part-time (Virtual) – (Monday-Friday; 5.30PM – 8.30PM)
Entry Requirements
i. Bachelor’s degree recognised by Amref International University Senate with a Second-Class Honours Upper Division or
Second Division in health sciences, education or social sciences; OR
ii. Masters degree from any other related discipline from a university recognised by Amref International University Senate.
iii. Any other qualification as recognised by the university Senate.
All International undergraduate students upon admission should submit their certificates to Commission for University
Education (CUE) for recognition.
Mode of delivery: Virtual (Monday-Friday; 5.30PM – 8.30PM)
At the end of the programme, the graduate will be able to:
- a) Apply the knowledge and skills acquired in the implementation of public health programs at national and international levels;
b) Design, plan, implement and evaluate school health programmes in Kenya and the region;
c) Develop innovative public health nutrition programmes linking with other sectors to advance mainstreaming public health nutrition for disease prevention;
d) Apply appropriate epidemiological techniques and methods to conduct research that will contribute to policy and practice in the region;
e) Demonstrate and promote professional ethics, appropriate values, and attitudes in public health management and research.
f) Design and conduct a research thesis on track relevant public health problem and publish an article in a peer reviewed journal
Local & International Non-Governmental Organisations, Research Institutions, Ministry of Health, Academic Institutions, United Nations Organisations, Health Care Insurance Organisation, Community health services, Financial institutions (Health programmes), Hospitals, County Governments.
Fees charged for the programmes is very competitive in the region and offers room for a flexible within-semester-payment plan. Those on scholarship can have a case-by-case flexible payment arrangement plan with the scholarship management that allows agreed scheduled payments.
Registration
A Student may proceed to register only upon receipt of a provisional admission letter from Amref International University.
Time limits for this programme The MPH course takes a minimum of two academic years of two sementers each translating to 18 calendar months of study and a maximum of 4 academic years or 36 calendar months. Any continued study after the maximum 36 calendar months shall attract extra fees payment upon submission of an acceptable justification or automatic discontinuation for failure to achieve timely completion of the programme.
The curriculum consists of a one academic year for theoratical learning and classwork and the second year research work and thesis writing.
