Ecobank Kenya Donates an IT Lab to an Orphanage as Part of its 10th Ecobank Day Celebrations

The Computer Lab donated by Ecobank has a capacity of 25 people An initial donation of 15 computers worth over KES800,000 have been delivered to the home in phase 1 with 10 more to be delivered in the second phase Ecobank Day is marked annually through corporate social responsibility activities Nairobi, 21 October 2023… Ecobank Kenya, an affiliate of Ecobank Group, the leading pan-African banking group has partnered with Heritage of Faith and Hope Children Centre on a three-year campaign aimed at transforming the education of the youth and equipping them with digital skills necessary for the ever-changing job market. The Bank announced this when it donated a fully equipped computer lab to Heritage of Faith and Hope Children Centre in Mlolongo during its 10th Ecobank Day anniversary. Ecobank Day is Ecobank’s flagship Corporate Social Responsibility event which Ecobank and its employees leverage to give back to their communities. Heritage of Faith and Hope Children Centre was established in 2002 and provides shelter to over 120 vulnerable children, including orphans, aged between 3 and 20 years old. This donation follows the unveiling of a new three-year Ecobank Day campaign launched by Ecobank across its 33 affiliates where it seeks to create an impact in the education sector. The theme of this tri-annual campaign is: ‘Transforming Africa Through Education’. The first year of the campaign focuses on digital education and creating opportunities for children and youth so that they will receive the digital skills they need for the jobs of the future.  Ecobank, seeks to construct 33 IT labs across its footprint as part of its 10 years of Ecobank Day initiatives. The construction of a computer Lab at the orphanage seeks to ensure the vulnerable children have access to the much sought after digital skills. Josephine Anan-Ankomah, Ecobank Kenya Managing Director and Regional Executive – CESA, said: “Kenya’s population is forecast to grow from the current 53 million to 91.6 million by 2050 and it is vital that we equip our youth with the best possible set of skills that will set them up for tomorrow’s jobs. We are in era of rapid technological advances, with digital skills increasingly in demand. We are particularly proud to be part of the new digital education narrative in Kenya through this donation. I want to thank our partners including Heritage of Faith and Hope Children Centre, Belva Digital and Amref International University who have made this day a reality for our youths through their various contributions.” Heritage of Faith and Hope Children Centre Director, Teresia Waweru Kimiti said: “It is a much welcome gesture for Ecobank to give these vulnerable children a shoulder to lean on. This way, they will be digitally exposed just like other children in Kenya and their future will be brighter thanks to the construction of this computer lab.” Besides the IT lab, Ecobank’s partners Amref International University delivered a talk on digital skills while Belva Digital donated Sh100,000 towards purchase of both food and non-food items. Employees from the three organisations joined Ecobank during the activities at the orphanage that saw them mentor children while also lending a helping hand through cleaning, cooking and watering trees. Launch of AMIU ODeL Centre

The Amref International University (AMIU) is a Pan-African Health Sciences University established in 2017. AMIU is owned by Amref Health Africa.  The university contributes to Amref Health Africa’s vision of achieving lasting health change African. As such, the University works to produce fit for purpose graduates with transformative leadership skills and ability to apply evidence-based interventions to transform Primary Health Care (PHC).  To this end, AMIU has developed structures that promote student centred learning that bridges the knowledge and skills mismatch, making graduates ready to serve at the point of graduation. AMIU recognizes the challenge of making health education equitably accessible in all parts of Africa including the unstable, remote and broken countries. Further, on-going education that is accessible in communities where health workers are based is critical. Open Distance and eLearning (ODeL) with integrated hands-on mentorship provide the solution needed to meet the needs of health training in Africa. It is in recognition of this that AMIU has developed its unique ODeL centre. The centre has been approved by the Commission for University Education (CUE) in Kenya.  With this approval, AMIU is well positioned to achieve its Pan-African vision as spelt out in its strategy of providing borderless health training in the continent. To bolster its ODeL approaches further, AMIU has come up with a unique and contextualized Virtual Learner Support (VLS) model that ensures that students who are far from the main campus (within or outside Kenya) have access to seamless help desk and physical support in their learning activities.  This model is helping AMIU achieve its commitment to provide equitable and student-centred training in the Pan-African region. The university aims to have over 5000 students learning online by the year 2027 a target that is dependent on the ongoing development of more  ODeL academic  and CPD  programs , including  Massive Open and Online Courses (MOOCs). As AMIU celebrates its 4th graduation ceremony, the Board of Trustees, University Council, University management and faculty hereby invite our stakeholders and students from the continent to confidently pursue our ODeL programs, noting that their quality is well assured through regulatory compliance.
