AfyaFest 2025: Showcasing Youth-led Innovation for Primary Healthcare in Africa
From 26th to 28th August 2025, the Hyatt Regency in Westlands, Nairobi, became the hub of African health innovation as AfyaFest 2025 unfolded. This flagship event of the Africa Health Collaborative (AHC)—hosted by Amref Health Africa and Amref International University (AMIU) in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation—brought together young innovators, health entrepreneurs, higher education institutions, private and public sector leaders, and global partners from across eight countries. With the theme “Leveraging Health Innovation and Entrepreneurship to Improve Access to Primary Healthcare for All,” the three-day convening spotlighted bold, scalable solutions designed to transform Africa’s health landscape. The Big Picture: Why AfyaFest Matters Africa continues to face pressing health challenges in areas such as: Maternal & Child Health (RMNCAH) Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) & Mental Health Climate & Health Global Health Security AfyaFest 2025 created a platform for youth to validate their business models, network with investors and incubators, and forge collaborations that can accelerate solutions for the continent’s healthcare systems. The festival was not just about showcasing ideas; it emphasized community-centered design, job creation, cultural relevance, and systems integration—ensuring that health innovations work for Africa, by Africa. Highlights from the 3-Day Festival Day 1 – A Call to Rise as Job Creators AfyaFest 2025 opened with powerful plenary sessions that underscored the role of African youth as job creators. Speakers emphasized that universities must equip students not just with academic knowledge, but also with skills to adapt across sectors, innovate globally, and build enterprises that uplift communities. The tone was clear: Africa’s next generation of health leaders must be entrepreneurial, adaptable, and globally connected. Day 2 – Investor-Readiness & Scaling Health Startups The second day highlighted Africa’s resilience in health innovation. Mr. Sewu-Steve Tawia delivered a keynote underscoring how regional innovation networks, spanning Anglophone and Francophone Africa, are strengthening the continent’s capacity to scale health solutions. Masterclass sessions on investor-readiness revealed a crucial insight: to scale health innovations, entrepreneurs need both capital and compassion. Participants also explored how startups are tackling NCDs and mental health through fitness tech, mobile counseling apps, and wellness platforms—evidence of Africa’s growing digital health ecosystem. Day 3 – Showcasing the Future of African Health The final day was a celebration of African ingenuity. Exhibition booths buzzed with energy as youth-led teams presented their solutions. The high-energy pitching sessions reminded everyone that the future of health in Africa is being written by its young people. From wearable maternal health monitors to digital mental health platforms, the ideas on display weren’t waiting for change—they were building it. The event concluded with awards recognizing the most promising solutions, setting the stage for scale-up across the continent. Grand Opening of the New AMIU Campus The new campus was officially launched with a resounding message from Her Excellency Margaret Kenyatta: “This institution will transform health systems by building a skilled, visionary workforce for Africa.” Department/Faculty Highlights AITC’s Leadership in TVET Education Victor Wasilwa, Head of AITC, continues to lead in competency-based community health training. The directorate offers accredited TVETA programs that are equipping students with practical skills for the health workforce. Student Stories A Night to Remember: Finalist Dinner 2025 Students gathered one last time to celebrate resilience, friendship, and growth before the big day. A night of laughter, fashion, and memories. Nursing Pinning Ceremony AMIU’s nursing graduands took the oath to serve humanity, entering a profession built on compassion, dignity, and unwavering integrity. Voices from the Valedictorian Michelle Nyambura, PHC Champion and Class Valedictorian, inspired all with her call for mindset change and social transformation. She gave an inspiring speech and bits of it were quoted as inspirational as it came, she urged her fellow scholars ” We have had moments in our academic journey that we felt like giving up. The cap on the head makes it worth it. ” A change is uncomfortable but it is inevitable. We need to change our mindset and attitudes and evolve. We have the mindset to change our communities. ” Partnerships and Collaborations VvAA Supports AMIU Library Mr. Bart Janknegt, CEO of VvAA (Netherlands), announced a generous donation to support library improvements, furthering student success and access to academic resources. New Frontiers with EduNet Solutions A strategic meeting with Prof. Klaus Stierstorfer focused on launching executive education programs for professionals. A formal MoU is expected by October, paving the way for soft skills and corporate leadership training across Africa. Engaging with KCB Group A meeting with KCB Group explored joint initiatives in student financing, staff mortgages, clean energy, and financial inclusion for youth. Dialogue on Ending FGM AMIU Heritage and Ubuntu Club hosted Terrie Nderitu & Olivia Otieno, EU Women Empowerment Ambassadors, in a powerful forum on ending FGM and promoting gender equity. Policy Engagement with KEWOPA Prof. Joachim Osur joined legislators and IDinsight for a dialogue on data and evidence in policymaking. Alumni & AGAAN Leadership Visit We welcomed Ambassador Connie Nkatha Maina, interim AGAAN Chairperson, and Bitania Lulu (Director of Y-ACT), who called on alumni and friends to join AGAAN and shape AMIU’s legacy and youth advocacy impact. AMIU CULTURAL WEEK 2025 GOES DOWN… GRACEFUL & BREATHTAKING.
What’s Culture if someone may ask? It’s a tapestry of great norms and ways of life, perhaps one would answer. It’s our normal way of life, woven into societal norms and all the more. But what does culture across an entire continent look like or even the entire globe? All the norms and ways of doing things… all its niceties and heartbeats. All the throbs and teeming richness, a richness unique to all its people, each one an amazing mystery… magnificent indeed. Amref International University (AMIU) Cultural week 2025 has proven this and much more. This year’s cultural week ran for an entire week from 9th to 13th June 2025 with quite a good number of students attending each session. The event under the theme ‘Beyond borders, united by culture’ did a great part in showcasing the diversity and creativity of the AMIU community while fostering unity. Incessant nice music which blared from the music system and echoed across school’s buildings on was a key ingredient of the event which featured so much more; On Monday, official wear was the way to go. A bunch of unforgettable photos were taken at the newly constructed library building. Giggles and hearty laughter were rife as the students donned in official wear took turns in the detailed and well-organized kick-off photo session. The building towered elegantly to make a shiny glass background that resonated with the joy of the event’s kick-off, a joy whose greatness lasted for the rest of the day. A casual glance around AMIU Compound on Tuesday revealed a step back in time into the heart of the 1960s 1970s and early 20th century with vintage rocking AMIU streets all the more. Glitz, glamour, fashion, just to capture it all. It was such a zealous touch back in time with an unparalleled aura. Then along came Wednesday and denim wear was the in-thing… The navy blue hues and strong fabrics were trendy and catchy all across, and in photos too; pristine dresses, trousers, jackets and shirts; It made a distinct homogeny and an amazing difference. Thursday represented culture in all aspects. Cultural robes were worn with pride and elegance with people across various cultures retracing their origin through captivating origin stories and a horde of other niceties. Cuisine was well prepared across various cultures, from the Turkana to the Luo, the Kikuyu, the Somali & the Maasai. Cultural dances and music gave a stunning tickle to the afternoon, with the Luo, Maasai and the Turkana taking up the first, second and third position respectively. The widely advertised play ‘Lie or die’ wrapped up the day’s activities so well. The play which showcased from 7:00 -9:00 p.m. witnessed a cheerful fan base and so much accolade and praise. Friday was sporty, with sportswear stealing a classy show. Shorts, knickers, tracksuits & sport jerseys were worn to mark this relevant day, making it a sight to behold. The gala night featured a thrilling music and art performance and an adorable modelling session where the models walked across the stage, cheers all along, and a flashy fashion. The crème de la crème was the crowning of Mr. Christopher Murungaru &Ms. Flavian Maketso as Mr & Miss AMIU 2025 respectively. With the display of culture and all it holds, the week-long event was indeed a great flavor added to the year 2025 as Amref International University builds up a brilliant pace at its new location in Northlands, along Thika Road.

A New Chapter Unfolds: AMIU’s Relocation to our Campus at Northlands
A new chapter has opened for Amref International University (AMIU) as it officially relocates from its Lang’ata campus to its new, state-of-the-art Campus at Northlands, situated just off Thika Road Super Highway. The relocation is not just geographical—it is an attestation of the university’s unwavering determination in its core purpose: developing fit-for-purpose leaders in primary health care. Right from when students set foot on the spacious campus, the difference is evident. The serene environment, modern architecture, and meticulously planned layout make for a perfect ambiance of learning, innovation, and overall development. The transition has been thrilling and nostalgic for students who had grown accustomed to the Lang’ata setup, but the opinion is unanimous—the campus in Northlands is an upgrade, and a massive one at that. We’ve been able to catch our students exploring the new campus, from the spacious student residences to the vibrant student center. Their glowing reviews express a deep appreciation for the environment now shaping their learning experience. As one student so aptly put it, “The campus at Northlands is a place that feels like our dreams can become rooted and really grow.” Faculty members and staff have also embraced the change, quickly adjusting to the rhythm of the new campus. The improved infrastructure has raised their capacity to deliver quality education and mentorship, while proximity to major transport lines has made commuting easier for many. Overall, the sentiment is that the Northlands campus offers new energy, focus, and direction. By doing so, AMIU took a significant leap toward the fulfillment of its vision to become a world-class African institution of health sciences education. The new campus presents not only the possibility for academic excellence but also for the establishment of a close-knit community and principled leadership. This is more than an address change or a relocation, it is a rebirth. Featured News AMIU-APS Leads Student Visit to KISE A fully student-led visit to the Kenya Institute of Special Education (KISE) provided AMIU Physiotherapy, Community Health, Psychology, and Disability Inclusion students with an immersive learning experience. Students deepened their understanding of inclusive education, adaptive interventions, and cross-disciplinary collaboration. Discussions also explored clinical rotations at KISE, ensuring future professionals gain hands-on experience. The four-day event focused on refining ideas, strengthening business models, and pitching to potential investors. Advancing SRHR: AMIU Hosts Center for Reproductive Rights Board AMIU welcomed the Center for Reproductive Rights Board (USA) for a pivotal discussion on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR). Students participated in insightful presentations and panel discussions, reinforcing AMIU’s role in shaping SRHR advocacy and policy. Community Outreach & Social Impact Tackling Gender-Based Violence in Higher Education Prof. Tammary Rotich, AMIU’s Deputy Vice Chancellor, was the Guest Speaker at the launch of a study on Gender-Based Violence in Kenyan universities, conducted by Wangu Kanja Foundation, CASV, and Oxfam. AMIU remains committed to creating safe learning spaces for all. Ending TB: AMIU & Abbott Diagnostics Collaboration In observance of World TB Day 2025, AMIU is working with Abbott Diagnostics to develop eLearning resources for TB diagnostics and management in primary healthcare settings. The initiative will begin in select counties before expanding nationwide. Achievements & Milestones Health Entrepreneurship Pitching Competition Following the ‘From Idea to Impact’ workshop, participants pitched their groundbreaking health solutions in a competitive session judged by industry experts. Swiss Ambassador H.E. Mirko Giulietti honored the top team, with Nutrimama, Mazingira Afya, and Mama Tuk emerging as the leading social enterprises. Featured News Prof. Dr. Fadul Nada’s Eye-Opening Public Lecture Prof. Dr. Fadul Nada delivered an insightful lecture at AMIU Auditorium, focusing on bridging the gap between knowledge and practice in community health. The session, hosted by the School of Public Health and the Office of the Deputy Vice Chancellor, engaged both in-person and online attendees, sparking meaningful discussions on innovative approaches in the field. Celebrating Dr. Roy Shaffer’s 100th Birthday AMIU and Amref Health Africa honored Dr. Roy Shaffer, a pioneer in community health, as he turned 100! A foundational figure in Amref’s early years, Dr. Shaffer established the first Community-Based Health Care (CBHC) program and launched the iconic Dr. Amref radio program. The event, graced by AMIU VC Prof. Joachim Osur and Amref Health Africa Group CEO Dr. Githinji Gitahi, celebrated his enduring impact on global health. 2. Department & Faculty Highlights Global Health Security Post-Summit Workshop Following the East African Region Global Health Security Summit 2025, AMIU hosted the first post-summit workshop. Experts, including Dr. Immanuel Nzai (Kenya Vision 2030), Dr. Judy Kose (Africa CDC), and Dr. Wycliff Onkoba, led discussions on curriculum development to strengthen regional health security through education and collaboration. Brighton University Exchange Program Feedback Session AMIU welcomed University of Brighton students for a feedback session on their exchange studies and clinical placement. This initiative bridges theory and practice, empowering students with hands-on experience in Physiotherapy and health sciences. 3. Student & Alumni Stories Football Scout & Biographer Visit AMIU As part of the build-up to Dr. Roy Shaffer’s centennial celebrations, the AMIU Heritage Office hosted football scout Thomas Legg and renowned editor Caleb Atemi. They shared valuable insights with students, reinforcing AMIU’s deep-rooted heritage in health sciences. 4. Partnerships & Collaborations Amref Health Africa Ethiopia Staff Visit AMIU hosted 13 staff members from Amref Health Africa Ethiopia for capacity-building training on Health Financing and Strategic Health Purchasing. Facilitated by Amref HQ, this session provided exposure to Amref’s diverse resources supporting health system growth in Sub-Saharan Africa. Grandson of AMREF Founder Visits AMIU Nicholas McIndoe Walters, grandson of AMREF co-founder Sir Archibald McIndoe, visited AMIU’s Northlands Campus. His visit emphasized AMIU’s mission of empowering transformative health leaders and sustainability. Key discussions revolved around scholarships, partnerships, and strengthening the AGAAN network. 5. Community Outreach Sustainability Through Tree Planting Nicholas McIndoe Walters planted trees at AMIU’s Northlands Campus, supporting environmental conservation. Featured News AMIU to Participate in AHAIC 2025 AMIU is poised to demonstrate thought leadership at the Africa Health Agenda International Conference AHAIC 2025. East Africa Region Global Health Security Summit 2025 (EARGHSS 2025) From January 28-30, AMIU partnered with Amref Health Africa and co-hosted EARGHSS 2025 in Mombasa, Kenya. Areas of concern on the keynote stage included, among others, pandemics, response to bioterrorism, and improving global health security through academia. Prof. Tammary Rotich participated in this critical panel that called for updated research and innovation for the achievement of health security. H.E. Uhuru Kenyatta Visits Amref Health Africa Booth H.E Uhuru Kenyatta, Former President of the Republic of Kenya applauded AMIU and Amref Health Africa at AMREF’s booth at EARGHSS 2025, for commitment towards strengthening Community-Led Initiatives in improving health. Department/Faculty Highlights Knowledge Exchange with University of Virginia The event was led by Prof. Anne from the University of Virginia, USA, leading a delegation to an enriching knowledge-sharing session with students and faculty at AMIU. A link between African and American health education that may produce future leaders in global health. EARGHSS 2025 Pre-Summit Meeting Prof. Tammary Rotich presided over a preparatory meeting for EARGHSS 2025 to ensure that program planning is efficient, the logistics are right, and both AMIU and Amref Health Africa participate strategically. Student and Alumni Stories Historic CME Event for Physiotherapists The AMIU-APS (Association of Physiotherapy Students) conducted Kenya’s first ever student-organised CME in collaboration with the Kenya Society of Physiotherapists. This historically important step shows the commitment of AMIU to novel student-centered initiatives in health-care education. Partnerships and Collaborations CDAE Dissemination & Closeout Workshop AMIU, in collaboration with Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University, graduated 15 epidemiology fellows from Malawi, Tanzania, Somalia, Zambia, and Kenya. These are the fellows who shall revolutionize Africa’s public health through high-level research and policy development. Community Outreach AMIU Open Day – A Resounding Success! AMIU hosted an Open Day that offered career guidance, interactive tours, and insight into our state-of-the-art health science programs. The event reemphasized AMIU’s position as a leading health education institution in Africa.
